The U.S. fluid gallon is part of the U.S. customary liquid-measure system, where 4 quarts = 1 gallon and the gallon equals 231 cubic inches exactly. That means the cubic-inch-to-gallon ratio is not an estimate or a rounded engineering shortcut.

The inch itself is exact in metric terms because the international yard and pound agreement fixed 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters exactly. From that relationship, 1 cubic inch = 16.387064 milliliters exactly, and 231 cubic inches = 3.785411784 liters exactly, which is the exact size of 1 U.S. fluid gallon.

Example Calculation

Suppose a rectangular container, duct box, or small reservoir has an internal volume of 648 cubic inches. To convert that volume to U.S. gallons, divide 648 by 231.

648 in³ / 231 in³/gal = 2.805194805 gal (US)

Rounded to two decimal places, the capacity is about 2.81 U.S. gallons. The numerical value becomes smaller because one gallon contains many cubic inches.

Example for Tank and Reservoir Sizing

Small tanks, molded containers, machine reservoirs, and utility boxes are often dimensioned in inches even when the usable capacity is quoted in gallons. If a tank measures 11 in x 7 in x 3 in internally, its geometric volume is 231 cubic inches, which is exactly 1 U.S. fluid gallon.

Cautions

Make sure the gallon really is the U.S. fluid gallon. Imperial gallons and U.S. dry gallons are different units, so the same number of cubic inches will not give the same result if a different gallon definition is intended.

Be careful to convert internal volume, not outside dimensions. Wall thickness, rounded corners, fittings, and headspace can reduce the liquid a real container holds even when the geometric volume is easy to compute from length x width x height.

Do not confuse cubic inches with square inches or linear inches. Cubic inches measure volume, so all three dimensions must be included before converting to gallons.
