The modern pound is linked directly to the kilogram through the international yard and pound agreement adopted in 1959. Since 1 kilogram contains exactly 1000 grams and the international pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram, the gram-to-pound relationship is fixed rather than experimentally estimated.

This same relationship also links grams to ounces. Since 16 avoirdupois ounces make 1 pound, 1 ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams. That is why food packaging, kitchen scales, and small parcel weights are often shown in grams and ounces together, even when pounds are used for larger totals.

Example Calculation

Suppose a bag of coffee has a net mass of 500 grams. To convert grams to pounds, multiply 500 by approximately 0.00220462262185.

500 g x 0.00220462262185 lb/g = 1.102311310925 lb

The bag therefore weighs about 1.10 pounds. Because the pound is the larger unit, the converted number is much smaller than the original number of grams.

Example for Cooking and Grocery Packaging

Metric package sizes are common in international food trade, while many U.S. shoppers think in pounds. A 250 gram block of butter is about 0.551 pound, a 500 gram package is about 1.102 pounds, and a 1 kilogram bag is about 2.205 pounds. This makes the conversion useful when comparing imported goods with recipes, portion sizes, or shelf labels that show price per pound.

Quick Estimate

For a quick estimate, first convert grams to kilograms by moving the decimal three places to the left, then multiply by 2.2 to get an approximate weight in pounds. For example, 750 grams is 0.75 kilogram, and 0.75 x 2.2 is about 1.65 pounds. The exact value is about 1.65347 pounds, so this shortcut is usually close enough for rough planning.

This page converts grams to pounds as units of mass. In technical contexts the word pound can also refer to force, so be sure the quantity being converted is a mass and not a force measurement.

This conversion applies to the ordinary avoirdupois pound used for goods, body mass, and package weights. Other pounds exist, including the troy pound used historically for precious metals, and they do not have the same gram equivalent.

Do not confuse grams with grains. A grain is a much smaller non-SI unit used in ammunition and some specialty fields, and it is not interchangeable with a gram. For very small masses, ounces or grams may also communicate the value more naturally than decimal pounds.
