About Square Feet to Square Meters Conversion

Square feet (sq ft or ft2) and square meters (m2) are units of area from the U.S. customary and metric systems, respectively. Converting square feet to square meters is common in real estate, flooring, construction, architecture, and product specification work when room sizes or floor areas must be compared across markets that use different measurement systems.

The conversion is exact: 1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters. This follows from the exact length relationship 1 foot = 0.3048 meter, because area units must be squared (0.3048 x 0.3048 = 0.09290304). To convert square feet to square meters multiply by 0.09290304. To reverse the process, divide by 0.09290304 or multiply square meters by 10.7639104167 to obtain square feet.

Since a square meter is larger than a square foot, the numerical value becomes smaller when an area is expressed in square meters. This is normal. A room listed as 250 square feet is only 23.22576 square meters, even though the physical space has not changed.

Why the Conversion Factor Is Squared

Area conversions are based on length conversions in two dimensions. A square foot is the area of a square measuring 1 foot on each side, while a square meter is the area of a square measuring 1 meter on each side. Because 1 foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, 1 square foot is exactly 0.3048 x 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meters.

This point matters because people sometimes use the length factor 0.3048 directly when converting area. That is incorrect. Area must be converted with the squared factor, not the linear one.

Example Calculation

Suppose a room is listed as 250 square feet. Multiply 250 by 0.09290304 to convert the area to square meters.

250 ft2 x 0.09290304 m2/ft2 = 23.22576 m2

The room therefore has an area of about 23.23 square meters. Because square meters are larger units of area, the numerical value is smaller than the original number of square feet.

Example for Flooring and Interior Renovation

Flooring products, paint coverage, and room specifications are often sold or quoted in different measurement systems. A 12 ft by 15 ft room has an area of 180 square feet, which converts to 16.7225472 square meters. Converting to square meters makes it easier to compare carpet, tile, laminate, or room-size listings from suppliers and property listings outside the United States.

Quick Estimate

For rough mental math, multiply square feet by 0.093 or by 0.1 and then subtract about 7 percent. For example, 300 square feet times 0.093 is about 27.9 square meters. The exact value is 27.870912 square meters, so the shortcut is usually good enough for quick planning but not for final purchasing.

The table below gives several reference values that are useful in property listings, flooring estimates, and renovation planning.

Cautions

Do not use the linear foot-to-meter factor 0.3048 when converting area. That factor applies to one-dimensional lengths only. Square areas must use 0.09290304.

Real estate and building documents may define area differently. Gross floor area, net usable area, rentable area, interior finished area, and lot area can all measure different things even when they use the same units. Always confirm what area is being reported before comparing properties or ordering materials.

Ordinary square foot conversions today are based on the international foot. Historical survey records may involve legacy U.S. survey units, so older land documents may need extra care if exact boundary area matters.
