Unit Descriptions
1 Yard (International):
Imperial/US length of 3 feet or 36 inches. In 1959 defined in terms of metric units as exactly 0.9144 meters. 1 international yard is exactly 0.9144 meters (SI base unit of length). 1 yd = 0.9144 m.
1 Mile:
1 Mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres by international agreement in 1959. In SI units it is exactly 1609.344 meters. The length is based originally on the distance marched in 1000 paces of two steps each. 1mi = 1.609344 km = 80 chains = 5280 ft = 1760 yd.

About Yards to Miles Conversion

Yards (yd) and miles (mi) are customary units of length used for land distance. The yard is convenient for medium distances like fields, sites, and sports measurements, while the mile is the larger unit commonly used for road distance, route planning, and geographic separation. Converting yards to miles is useful when a shorter measured distance needs to be understood as a fraction of a mile or whole miles and decimals.

The conversion is exact: 1 mile = 1760 yards, so 1 yard = 1/1760 mile = 0.000568181818... mile. To convert yards to miles, divide the number of yards by 1760. Because the mile is much larger than the yard, the numerical value becomes much smaller when yards are expressed in miles.

In ordinary use this conversion refers to the statute mile used for land distance, not the nautical mile used in marine and air navigation. That difference matters because a nautical mile is longer than a statute mile.

Exact Relationship

The modern yard is tied to the meter through the international yard and pound agreement, which fixed 1 yard at exactly 0.9144 meter. The modern statute mile is exactly 5280 feet, and since 3 feet make 1 yard, one mile contains exactly 1760 yards. The yard-to-mile conversion is therefore exact rather than approximate.

This exact ratio explains several familiar benchmark values: 440 yards is exactly 1/4 mile, 880 yards is exactly 1/2 mile, and 1320 yards is exactly 3/4 mile.

Example Calculation

Suppose a route segment or training interval is 500 yards long. Divide 500 by 1760 to convert the distance to miles.

500 yd x 1/1760 mi/yd = 0.2840909091 mi

The segment is therefore about 0.284 mile, or about 0.28 mile if two decimal places are enough for the job. The result is smaller than the original number because a mile is a much larger unit than a yard.

Example for Sports and Training

Yard markings are still common in American football and in older race descriptions, while runners and route planners often think in miles. A 100-yard football field between goal lines is about 0.0568 mile. An 880-yard repeat is exactly half a mile, and a 1760-yard run is exactly 1 mile. The conversion makes it easier to compare field distances, interval workouts, and road distances on the same scale.

Cautions

This page uses the ordinary statute mile for land distance. Do not substitute the nautical mile, which is exactly 1852 meters and is used for marine and air navigation rather than ordinary yard-based land measurement.

Older surveying and mapping records may also refer to legacy U.S. survey units. For everyday conversions the difference is usually negligible, but for high-precision geodetic or boundary work you should confirm whether the record uses international or survey definitions.

Yards are convenient for medium-length field distances, but feet may be more natural for smaller construction dimensions. Conversely, kilometers may be easier to communicate than decimal miles when a project is already documented in metric units.
