Dog Age to Human Age Calculation:

  • D =
    Dog Age

Age of the dog in years.

  • Sz =
    Dog Size

Choose the size group that best matches the dog.

  • H =
    Human Years

Approximate human-age equivalent using a common rule-of-thumb model.

  • Decimals

Choose the number of decimals to show in your answer. This is also known as significant figures. Select an appropriate amount of significant figures based on the precision of the input numbers.

Dog Age to Human Age Formula

A common rule of thumb treats the first dog year as about 15 human years, the second as about 9 more, and later years as a smaller step that depends on the dog's size.

first year = 15, second year = 9, later years = 5 to 8 each

This is an approximation for comparison, not a veterinary ageing model.

Dog Age to Human Age Variables

Dog Age
The dog's age in years. Fractions can be used for partial years.
Dog Size
The size group used to choose the later-year ageing factor.
Human Years
The estimated human-age equivalent produced by the rule-of-thumb model.

How the Calculation Works

  1. Assign about 15 human years to the first dog year.
  2. Add about 9 human years for the second year.
  3. For years after that, add a size-based amount for each extra year.

Dog Age to Human Age Example

What is the rough human-age equivalent of a 5-year-old medium dog?

  • first two dog years = 15 + 9 = 24
  • remaining dog years = 5 - 2 = 3
  • medium dog factor = 6
  • human years = 24 + (3 x 6) = 42

Using this simplified model, a 5-year-old medium dog is about 42 human years old.
