Rectangle Perimeter Calculation:

  • w =
    Width

    Horizontal width of the rectangle.

  • h =
    Height

    Vertical height of the rectangle.

  • u =
    Units

Optional unit label to append to the answer, such as cm, m, ft, or inches.

  • P =
    Perimeter

Distance around the outside of the rectangle.

  • Decimals

Choose the number of decimals to show in your answer. This is also known as significant figures. Select an appropriate amount of significant figures based on the precision of the input numbers.

Rectangle Perimeter Formula

The perimeter of a rectangle is the total length of all four sides.

P = 2w + 2h = 2(w + h)

Since opposite sides are equal, you only need the width and height once each.

Rectangle Perimeter Variables

A rectangle perimeter uses the same two dimensions as the area calculation.

Width (w)
The horizontal dimension of the rectangle.
Height (h)
The vertical dimension of the rectangle.
Perimeter (P)
The total distance around the boundary of the rectangle.

How the Calculation Works

Add twice the width and twice the height.

  1. Measure the width.
  2. Measure the height.
  3. Add both pairs of equal sides together.

Rectangle Perimeter Example

What is the perimeter of a rectangle 8 units wide and 3 units high?

  • P = 2w + 2h
  • P = 2(8) + 2(3)
  • P = 22 units

A rectangle with width 8 and height 3 has a perimeter of 22 units.
