Cube Surface Area Calculation:

  • a =
    Side Length

Length of one edge of the cube.

  • u =
    Units

Optional unit label to append to the answer, such as cm, m, ft, or inches.

  • A =
    Surface Area

Total area of all six faces of the cube.

  • Decimals

Choose the number of decimals to show in your answer. This is also known as significant figures. Select an appropriate amount of significant figures based on the precision of the input numbers.

Cube Surface Area Formula

A cube has six equal square faces, so its total surface area is six times the area of one face.

A = 6a2

If you already know the area of one face, multiply it by 6 to get the full exterior area of the cube.

Cube Surface Area Variables

A cube needs only one side measurement to determine its surface area.

Side Length (a)
The length of one edge of the cube.
Surface Area (A)
The total area of the cube's six outer faces.

How the Calculation Works

Square the side length to find one face, then multiply by 6.

  1. Measure one edge of the cube.
  2. Calculate the area of one square face.
  3. Multiply by 6 because a cube has six faces.

Cube Surface Area Example

What is the surface area of a cube with side length 3 units?

  • A = 6a2
  • A = 6(32)
  • A = 6(9)
  • A = 54 square units

A cube with side length 3 units has a surface area of 54 square units.
