Hexagon Area Calculation:

  • a =

    Length of a single side

  • A =

    Area of the hexagon

  •

Choose the number of decimals to show in your answer. This is also known as significant figures. Select an appropriate amount of significant figures based on the precision of the input numbers.

Hexagon Area Formula

Given the side length of a hexagon the area can be calculated using the formula below.

A = (3 * √ 3) / 2 * a2

Hexagon Area Variables

A hexagon is a two-dimensional shape with six even sides. The length of one side can be used to find the area.

Side (a)
Length of one side of the hexagon in linear units.
Area (A)
Area of a hexagon in square units.

Hexagon Area Solution

What is the area of a hexagon given the side length of 9?

  • A = (3 * √ 3) / 2 * a2
  • Substitute in the known values
  • A = (3 * √ 3) / 2 * 92
  • Find the area given a side length (a) of 9
  • A = (5.196) / 2 * 92
  • Find the square root inside the bracket, complete the bracket by multiplying by three, rounded to three decimals
  • A = (5.196) / 2 * 81
  • Square the side length
  • A = 5.196 / 2 * 81
  • Completely solve the interior bracket
  • A = 210.438
  • Perform division and multiplication in the order they appear. Since the root was rounded to three decimals our answer is not exactly the same as the calculator where more decimals are used
  • 210.438

A heagon with a side of 9 units will have an area of about 210.438 square units.

Hexagon Area Example

If a hexagon has a side of 20 mm what is the area?

  • A = (3 * √ 3) / 2 * a2
  • A = (3 * √ 3) / 2 * 202
  • A = 5.196 / 2 * 202
  • A = 5.196 / 2 * 400
  • A = 1039.2
  • ~1039.2 mm2

A hexagon with a side length of 20 mm has an area of about 1039.2 mm2.
